Chapter 10

Miles

Now why had he gone and done that?

Miles found himself grinning at the lovely Sarah McGowan, for she was quite nice to look at. And intelligent. She was nice to listen to and look at.

He almost groaned as he realized the direction of his thoughts. There must be something broken in him. His hoard had always been more important than anything and now? He was leaving his new treasure on board, locked yes but unattended, so he could prance around with this lady.

He sighed.

“Is everything all right, Mr. Franklin? Did you recall another engagement? I am happy to take up-”

“No need, all is well but if it is all right with you, I will handle a couple of items and then meet you back here on the deck in half an hour?”

“Certainly, that gives me time to gather a few things and ready my companion.”

“Excellent. I shall see you shortly.”

Making his way back to his cabin, Miles felt like bashing his head into the wooden walls several times. His desire to hang out with the lady overcame anything else and after checking and checking and triple checking his treasure, he locked everything tight and headed to the deck.

Miss McGowan had yet to arrive so he sauntered over to Duncan.

“Hey mate. I am sorry, I don’t know what came over me.”

Duncan raised a brow. “You don’t do you?”

Thomas piped in from where he was coiling some rope, “Not an idea in yer head?” Miles scowled at his smiling face.

“No. Exactly no ideas.”

Duncan and Thomas shared a look, each shaking their heads.

“Fine, I retract my apology. You two buffoons can keep each other company while I see the sights.”

“The sights. Indeed,” Duncan smiled and chuckled. Miss McGowan approached them then.

“I’m glad to see everyone in such a fine mood.” She had on a light shawl over her sky blue dress and held a small purse, the strap looped around her wrist. Her companion, Miles forgot her name, stood back staring at the deck. He wondered how helpful she would be if Sarah, Miss McGowan, actually needed help with anything.

Only a few minutes later they found themselves off the ship, and walking down the dock toward a park just ahead on the water’s edge and the town beyond.

Miss McGowan was slightly wobbly and held tightly onto his arm which made his chest puff up a bit. The companion strolled behind them. He could feel every part of Sarah’s hand on his arm, hear every step of the companion, of the people around him.

He welcomed the noises of the city as they walked through the park and entered the main street. The park was lovely, but they were both itching for some entertainment.

“Oh, my! Would you just look at those bicycles! They have advanced so much!”

“Indeed, those are nice,” Miles commented as they passed the shop with the silver and bronze steam bikes, “but there is another land, very far from here where I have seen similar with electric engines attached. They are fast too.
